BAE Systems: Bay 10 – Barrow

Project Title: Bay 10 Strengthening Works

Client: Eric Wright Group for BAE Systems

Project Description: Goodson Associates were employed by the Eric Wright Group to provide the civil and structural consultancy services for the major strengthening works to Bay 10 at BAE Systems, Barrow. Goodson Associates, as the client brief, designed the strengthening works to allow the facility to keep operational during the works including the use of the 100 tonne overhead crane. Goodson Associates carried out an assessment of the existing structure and the ground conditions which then allowed us to design and detail the strengthening to the existing foundations and existing portal frames. All the designs went through the BAE rigorous approval process prior to starting on site.

    Work involve

    • Site wide drainage
    • Major strengthening of Bay 10 foundations and steel frame
    • New substation
    • New gas storage facility
    • Redesign of all the Bay 10 foundation strengthening.
    • Redesign of drainage to avoid unknown obstructions and contamination in the ground
    • Redesign foundation solution for gas facility due to significant depth of made ground

    Program

    • Major pressure from the MOD to achieve program
    • BAE requirement to review all information prior to construction – review dates fixed
    • Provide adequate resources to ensure that design information is issued to BAE in time for their review.
    • Quick turnaround of information where redesign has been necessary

    Live site

    • Bay 10 needs to keep operational during all strengthening works. Solutions designed to reduce/eliminate possible hazards to construction and BAE staff.
    • Gas facility and substation and drainage works are within the live BAE site. Proposed solutions need to limit disruption to BAE staff in the adjacent offices i.e. reduce noise, dust, number of deliveries.
    • Solutions have been designed to allow site works to stop quickly to provide safe access for BAE staff if required.

    Budget

    • Significant risk to the contractor from unknowns in the ground.
    • Simple economic solutions proposed – solution discuss with contractor and sub-contractors to find the most cost effective solution.
